Practise with feedbackMasā' ends with a hamza, a tiny catch in the throat like the break in "uh-oh." In casual speech people often drop it: masa l-khēr.
Stretch the long ā: ma-SAA. Then blend straight into the article: ma-SAA-al-KHAYR.
The kh in khayr is the rasp of Scottish "loch," made at the back of the mouth. It is never a k.
In masā' an-nūr, hold the long ū in nūr like "noor," not "nur."

LevantineGood evening, and welcome to the news.

GulfUsing it like a local
Evenings are when much of Arab social life happens. Visits to family, coffee with friends and late dinners often start after sunset, so you'll say masā' al-khayr a lot, both on arrival and to shopkeepers and neighbors on the way.
The reply matters. Answering masā' al-khayr with masā' an-nūr, "evening of light," is expected, and friends love to top each other: roses, jasmine, honey. Returning a greeting with something a little warmer is a small, everyday courtesy.
Masā' al-khayr is a hello, not a goodbye. When leaving in the evening, say maʿa as-salāma or, late at night, tiṣbaḥ ʿala khēr (good night).
