Practise with feedback
  1. ʿAmm starts with ع, a tight sound squeezed from the throat. Without it, ʿamm sounds like أم (umm), "mother," so it is worth practicing.

  2. The m in ʿamm is doubled. Hold it: ʿAM-m, ʿAM-mi, ʿAM-mo.

  3. The kh in khāl is the rough sound in Scottish "loch." Hold the long ā: KHAAL.

  4. The -o in ʿammo and khālo is a pure "o" as in Spanish, not the English "oh-oo."

Using it like a local

Getting ʿamm and khāl right matters, because Arabic families think of the two sides differently. The father's side often carries the family name and its obligations, while the mother's brother is famously close and indulgent. A well-known saying goes الخال والد (al-khāl wālid), "the maternal uncle is a father."

ʿAmmo is a respectful, friendly way for children and young people to address older men: a neighbor, a shopkeeper, a parent's friend. Calling an older man by his first name alone can sound rude, so ʿammo or ʿammi is the safe choice.

Arabic has no single word for "cousin." You say whose child they are: ibn ʿammi, bint khāli and so on. In traditional families, ibn ʿamm also carries a sense of close kinship and loyalty.

What is the difference between ʿamm and khāl?

عم (ʿamm) is your father's brother and خال (khāl) is your mother's brother. Arabic always specifies the side of the family, so there is no general word that means just "uncle."

What does ammo mean in Arabic?

عمو (ʿammo) is the affectionate form of ʿamm, "uncle." Kids use it for their father's brother and also as a polite way to address any older man, like a neighbor or a friend's dad.

What does ya amm mean in Egyptian Arabic?

يا عم (ya ʿamm) literally means "oh uncle," but among Egyptian friends it means "dude" or "man." With an older man, ʿamm + his name, like ʿamm Ḥasan, is a respectful title.

How do you say cousin in Arabic?

There is no single word. You describe the relationship: ابن عمي (ibn ʿammi) is your father's brother's son, بنت خالي (bint khāli) is your mother's brother's daughter, and so on, with ʿamma and khāla for aunts.
